Taking Stock! Rest Day in Karratha

Karratha is a relatively new city in the Pilbara region, established in 1968 to accommodate workers employed by the Hammersley Iron Ore Mining Company.

Flanked on 3 sides by hills, entry to the city is via Stovepipe Hill - with a strong headwind yesterday, this was too much for us and we walked the last 100m.

Now a modern, compact city (16,000 residents in 2016) attractive, new apartment blocks advertise shops beneath for lease.

The shopping centre, in the middle of the city, small by NZ standards, offers Woolworths, Coles, K Mart and Target.

With a series of long, rides through remote areas to come (678 kms from here to the next town, Carnarvon) we stocked up on necessities today ready for our take off tomorrow.
